AN INTERNSHIP EVENING - Briefing on the New Colombo Plan
& Collaborative Education

Ms Melissa Hutchings from the Australian High Commission will be briefing us on the New Colombo Plan:
what it is, its key objectives, current progress, opportunities available under the scheme for students and
businesses, and internships! Melissa is the First Secretary, Political & Economic Section at the Australian
High Commission, focusing on trade and economic issues. Prior to her posting to Malaysia, she was Australia's
Intellectual Property Chapter Negotiator on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement and a legal specialist in
the Office of Trade Negotiations at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Canberra. Prior
to joining DFAT in 2009, Melissa was a property lawyer in Victoria.

In the second segment Mr David Kilpatrick will be showing us how collaboration in education benefits
students and enriches learning. David is the Principal of the Australian International School Malaysia and is
the Chairman of the Association of International Malaysian Schools (AIMS). He has been the Principal at
government funded schools in Australia, company sponsored schools in Indonesia and for-profit schools.
He has extensive experience in the international education industry being the former manager of
international education programs and business development for the Department of Education in Tasmania,
Australia. David has also established Australian Curriculum programs for schools in China.

Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA)
The Personal Data Protection Act 2010 came into force on 15 November 2013 to remedy the mischief of rampant and unregulated misuse of personal data in Malaysia. All “data users” will have 3 months from November 15, 2013 to register and comply with the Act.

This Act applies to any person who collects and processes personal data in or in relation to a commercial transaction. The penalty for non-compliance will be between RM100,000.00 to RM500,000.00 and/or imprisonment of between 1-3 years.

The Data Users Order lists the classes of data users who have to be registered with the Personal Data Protection Commissioner. The sectors which have been specified are:

  5. Health
  6. Insurance
  7. Real Estate
  8. Services; Legal, Audit, Accountancy
  9. Retailing
  10. Tourism and Hospitality
