Introduction

The Malaysia Australia Business Council (MABC) was established in 1986 ass a private non-profit organisation that provides a range of services to its members from businesses in Malaysia and Australia The MABC is a platform for Forums for the discussion and exchange of views on bilateral business conditions and also deals with domestic and international issues affecting companies and personnel.

The MABC is administered by an elected Executive Committee and is supported as co-patrons by the Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry and the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia.

Objectives of the MABC

i.
To promote and foster close relations between Malaysia and Australia, in particular mutual understanding, goodwill, harmony and fraternity amongst the business communities of both countries.

ii.
To provide a forum for meeting people involved or interested in enhancing trade and investment flows between Malaysia and Australia, in order to exchange ideas, experience, and information, develop contacts, and facilitate interaction.

iii.
To identify, encourage and inform members (and other interested parties) of appropriate sources of information relating to trade and investment opportunities, practices and regulations, in Malaysia and Australia.

iv.
To support Malaysian business interests in Australia, and Australian business interests in Malaysia, by providing information, advice and where necessary a vehicle for representations/submissions to appropriate bodies/parties.

v.
To liase and cooperate with organisations in Malaysia and Australia with aims similar to those of the Council.

Membership Categories/Fees

  1. Corporate: Open to companies or firms with Australian interests; or which are interested in developing trade or commercial interests in Australia; or who are engaged in the promotion of Australian products or services in Malaysia.
    Entrance fees: RM800.00 and Annual subscription: RM800.00

  2. Individual: Open to businesspersons, being citizens of Australia, residing in Malaysia and who are engaged in business or a profession; or citizens of Malaysia who represent Australian companies in Malaysia or who have substantial interest in trading with Australia; or business persons who either individually or in association with a corporate entity are prominent investors in Australia.
    Entrance fees : RM200.00 and Annual subscription: RM200.00

Activities of MABC

  • Ad-hoc talks and discussions with key business leaders, both from Australia and Malaysia, on matters relating to trade commerce and investment.

  • Representing members of MABC at the Annual Ministry of International Trade & Industry (MITI) dialogue, where issues, problems and concerns raised by members are brought to the attention of the Honourable Minister.

  • Organising dialogues with government Ministeries and departments on both general and specific issues

  • Organising Trade Missions to Perth in September 1986; to Melbourne and Sydney in March 1987; to Darwin and Brisbane in June 1988; to Perth in May 1989; to Adelaide in July 1990; to Sydney in June 1996 and to Sydney in July 2004.

  • Organising the MABC/AMBC Joint Council Meetings and the Joint Business Conference in 1994, 1998, 2000 and 2002 here in Kuala Lumpur.

  • Interacting with Australian groups with business interests and trade missions visiting Malaysia.

  • Periodic dissemination of information relating to opportunities in trade, commerce and investment both in Malaysia and Australia.

  • Provision of services to MABC members visiting Australia for purpose of business, through the use of MABC's contacts and counterparts in the main cities of Australia.

  • Provision of investment counselling services by the MABC Secretariat to members and visiting Australians, and general assistance in ‘follow-up' action.

  • Publication of MABC Byline, a quarterly members' newsletter, and a biennially produced MABC Membership Directory.

  • Talks where prominent personalities from both the private and public sectors are invited to address members on topics of relevance and interest to them.

  • Networking evenings where members and the Executive Committee meet and interact to exchange ideas, network and discuss matters of mutual interest. (Held at 6.30 p.m. on the last Thursday of each month at the Australian High Commission, by courtesy of the Australian High Commissioner.)

  • In 2004, the exco introduced the MABC Business Awards for competition among members. Three Awards are presented annually to members (company or individual) judged to have achieved outstanding performance in the categories of Business of the Year Award; SME Of the Year Award; Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
